French group Aeroconseil sets up in Greater Montreal

The French group Aeroconseil, expert in aeronautical engineering and air transport services, is launching its operations in Greater Montréal to develop its activities in North America. Aeroconseil Canada was created to become closer to its North American customers. The company plans to hire more than fifty employees over the next three years.

World aerospace industry meets in Montréal for AEROMART 2010

The AEROMART 2010 business convention opened at the Palais des congrès de Montréal and will run until April 29, 2010. AEROMART is the largest networking event among contractors, OEMs, suppliers or subcontractors of aviation services worldwide. More than 1,000 participants, representing some 500 aerospace companies from 22 countries around the world, are attending. The event offers a program of B2B meetings, thematic sessions with experts on various aerospace issues and technology conferences and workshops allowing participants to showcase their special expertise and know-how.

GM to invest $235 million in Ontario plant

General Motors will invest more than $235 million at its engine plant in St. Catharines, Ontario, to make the next generation of V8 engines and install a flexible assembly line. The St. Catharines plant has already been anointed for an investment to make a fuel-efficient transmission, but getting the nod to continue assembling V8 engines is expected to add some jobs at the plant, which already employs 1,200 people. In addition, GM has announced plans to invest at its car assembly plants in Oshawa, Ont., and a crossover utility vehicle in Ingersoll, Ont.

Canada’s aquaculture industry netting $2.1 billion annually

A new report by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans says Canada’s aquaculture industry generates $2.1 billion for the economy each year and contributes thousands of jobs in coastal and rural communities. The report also found aquaculture production more than quadrupled between 1990 and 2006. Of the $2.1 billion generated in 2007, more than $960 million was triggered by B.C. fish farms and about $415 million was generated in New Brunswick, while Ontario had the third-most at just under $170 million.

According to KPMG’s Competitive Alternatives study, Greater Montréal offers the most competitive business-operating costs among the main industrialized regions in the world. The city ranks 1st among the 41 metropolitan regions studied with a population of two million or more. The cost advantage of operating in Greater Montréal is 5.8%. In general, Metropolitan Montréal’s cost advantage is more striking in non-manufacturing sectors such as IT and enterprise services, as well as R&D services.

Economic outlook has Canada leading G7 countries in economic growth for 2010 and 2011: IMF

The International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) most recent economic outlook puts Canada on top of the G7 countries in economic growth this year and next. The IMF said in its World Economic Outlook that Canada’s GDP would grow 3.1% in 2010 and 3.2% in 2011. "Canada entered the global crisis in good shape, and thus the exit strategy appears less challenging than elsewhere," the IMF report shows.
