Alberta stimulates new energy investment, new technologies

The Alberta government unveiled initiatives to accelerate new technologies to encourage development of the province’s resource pools and finalized royalty curves for conventional oil and gas. The Emerging Resources and Technologies Initiative will strengthen a producer’s ability to invest in additional wells, as well as R&D. Energy development in Alberta represents almost 30% of the province’s total GDP and supports almost one in every seven jobs.

Siemens plans new wind turbine plant in Canada

Siemens Canada, a subsidiary of Germany’s Siemens AG, has plans to build a new wind turbine plant, likely in Ontario, to take advantage of demand for renewable energy as the country recovers from recession. "We are focusing on the province of Ontario, not yet decided where, but we are investigating some possible sites." Canada’s recovery is ahead of other major economies such as the U.S. and Europe, Aurich said. The country’s output will grow 3.6% this year, leading the Group of Seven industrialized nations, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said.

VR Business Sales opens first franchise office in Edmonton

Mortenson builds nine new wind projects in North America

Minneapolis-based Mortenson Construction is in the process of building nine new wind power projects throughout the US and Canada, all of which are expected to come on-line in 2010. The wind projects have a total generating capacity of more than 800MW of power. The new projects currently being constructed in Canada by Mortenson’s Renewable Energy Groups include: The Gosfield Wind Project in southwestern Ontario; The Dokie Wind Project in Chetwynd, British Columbia; And the St. Joseph Wind Farm near Montcalm, Manitoba.

According to KPMG’s latest study on Competitive Alternatives 2010, Special Report: Focus on Tax, companies in Greater Montréal benefit from among the lowest tax costs in the world. The study evaluates the fiscal competitiveness of 41 large international cities in 10 countries. In research and development, Montréal ranks second and takes top position in the Canada-USA region. In the Business IT services, the Greater Montréal region has also climbed into second place.

Global pharma company Teva invests in Ontario

Teva, a global pharma company, is investing $56 million to expand its Stouffville, Ontario production plant. The investment will help retain 182 high-skilled workers and hire 20 new employees. To make this possible, a partnership was announced with the office of Ontario’s Premier Dalton McGuinty.

Q1 Labs information technology firm adds up to 70 new employees in New Brunswick

Q1 Labs Canada will hire up to 70 new employees, including technical and sales positions, at its Fredericton and Saint John locations. Q1 Labs is also planning to expand its research and development centre in Fredericton. Q1 Labs Canada Inc. is a subsidiary of Q1 Labs Inc., based in Massachusetts and provides security intelligence software.
