France’s Medtech sets up operations in Montreal

French company Medtech, which specializes in the design of surgical assistive robots, announced that it will set up operations in Greater Montréal. The new entity plans to hire about ten people over the next two years. « By opening a location in Greater Montréal, Medtech seeks to pursue its commercial development at the international level. Our company plans to set up a distribution and support network for Québec hospitals in the near term, and intends to extend the network throughout the North American market in the medium term, » said Bertin Nahum, President and Founder of Medtech.

Rio Tinto sets up mine research in Canada

RIO Tinto said it will spend $10 million over five years to create a centre for underground mine construction in Ontario. The new centre will be Rio’s fifth research centre worldwide. The Sudbury, Ontario centre will focus on innovative rapid mine construction and ground control for mining at depth.

Chemical manufacturer targets Canadian market

A Yorkshire manufacturer of chemical storage tanks announced that it will expand in Canada after a series of contract wins. Chem Resist has sold two acid dilution plants to Canadian companies. For example, one has gone to ClearTech, an Edmonton-based distributor of chemicals, chemical feed equipment and laboratory products across Canada. Chem Resist said it wants to pick up more business in areas such as Edmondton, British Columbia and Toronto.

Solar industry to create more than 70,000 jobs in Ontario by 2015

Ontario’s Green Energy and Economy Act and the associated Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) program was announced to stimulate job growth and local investment while phasing out the use of coal in energy production. A recent study by ClearSky Advisors has found that, over the next 5 years, Ontario could create more than 70,000 person-years of employment in the province.

PTT gains foothold in Canada with a $2.3B investment

PTT Exploration and Production Plc has gained a foothold in Canada by paying around $2,3 billion for a 40% stake in the Kai Kos Dehseh project operated by the Norwegian oil and gas company Statoil ASA. This deal is said to be the largest overseas acquisition to date by a Thai company. In addition to gaining access to a highly attractive deposit in the western Canadian province of Alberta, the company hoped to pursue future growth into unconventional resources.

Illinois-based Tellabs opens mobile internet R&D office in Canada

Brazil investors push for Canada mines

The Wall Street Journal announced two high-profile mining investments by Brazilian companies in Canada. Mining giant Vale S.A., of Rio de Janeiro, said it will make $10 billion dollars investments in Canada over the next five years, potentially including a new potash mine in Saskatchewan. Brazil’s EBX Group also said it made a $1.2 billion cash offer to buy Ventana Gold Corp., a Vancouver-based miner with a gold deposit in Colombia.

Centrosolar Group AG, based in Munich Germany, announced the opening of Centrosolar Canada, establishing an increased commitment to the Canadian photovoltaics market. From the office in Markham, Ontario, Centrosolar Canada will offer German engineered photovoltaic rooftop systems to Canadian installers; including modules, inverters and racking components as well as complete prepackaged photovoltaic systems.
