Canada supports auto innovation

The Government of Canada announced a project to develop a new hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), supported by the Automotive Partnership Canada program, which will boost automotive R&D and will strengthen Canada’s economy over the long term. The $6.7 million grant will help a much bigger project worth $12.5 million. Funding for this project will help to position Quebec as a hub of expertise in HEV technology and will increase the number of professionals in this specialized area.

France’s Total, Suncor in $1.75B Canada oil sands deal

France’s Total and Suncor Energy Inc. of Canada are starting development of three multibillion-dollar oil sands projects in the latest in a flurry of deals that points to a renewed boom in the vast resources of northern Alberta. Total will spend $1.75 billion, which will expand the dominance of Suncor, already Canada’s largest oil company, in its main focus area, the Alberta oil sands. In the deal, Total will buy 19.2% of Suncor’s interest in the development.

Paladin Energy announced its expansion to Canada with a $260 million deal to buy Fronteer Gold’s uranium assets. "Paladin is currently the largest independent, pure play, publicly listed uranium producing company in the world and this move helps us consolidate on this position," Paladin chief executive John Borshoff said.

UK’s Sims Recycling Solutions opens new facility in Mississauga

It is said that Sims Recycling Solutions (SRS) has opened a new electronics recycling facility, a 287,000-square-foot facility, in Mississauga, Ontario. This new facility will include a mechanized cathode ray tube recycling process that yields commodity grades of leaded and non-leaded glass from monitors and televisions; better metals recycling technologies; and the newest plastic separation technology allowing for closed loop recycling of plastics.

Capital investment boosts Canadian wind turbine company, ReDriven Power

ReDriven Power announced that it has closed a $5 million investment to increase its operations and help clear its sales backlog of almost 100 wind turbine systems as well as support the expansion of sales globally. Christopher Grant, one of the company co-founders, added: "We founded ReDriven almost three years ago with a vision to become a key player in the small wind turbine sector." The investor is a private equity fund based in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Mitsubishi bringing projects to Manitoba

Manitoba and Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have entered into an agreement for a series of potential collaborative projects in eight key areas (battery-storage technologies, heat-pump technologies, electrification of transportation and recharging infrastructure, advanced bio-fuel technologies, wind-energy technologies, energy-efficiency systems and technologies, solar technologies and silicon processing, and integrated energy production, storage and utilization demonstrations).

Global IT services provider L&T Infotech enters Canada

India-based L&T Infotech is set to broaden its presence in the Canadian outsourcing market after acquiring Citigroup Canada’s IT outsourcing arm. « We were really looking to a much stronger foothold in the Canadian marketplace, » said Sudip Banerjee, CEO of L&T Infotech. The Citigroup acquisition now gives it an additional 215-person team.

Pfizer, Barry Callebaut expanding in Quebec

The U.S. biopharmaceutical company Pfizer and Swiss chocolatier Barry Callebaut both announced that they will each invest in Quebec-based facilities. Pfizer is investing $22 million in its lead Canadian office in Kirkland. The money will fund an expansion and facility renovation, as well as modernizing equipment. The company will also create 100 jobs as part of the expansion. Callebaut will invest $20.6 million in its Saint-Hyacinthe facility. The company expects to retain 487 existing jobs and create 22 new positions in the next three years.
