Cargill it will build a new facility in Alberta’s Peace River region to supply farmers with crop inputs by spring 2011. The company, headquarted in Minneapolis, has purchased 40 acres of land for the project. Cargill has recently expanded its grain handling capabilities with the Carseland, Alberta acquisition and its recent crop input facility purchase from Tri-Way Fertilizer in Balcarres, Saskatchewan.

Merck Canada invests $5M in Quebec consortium for drug discovery to support biopharmaceutical research

Merck Canada has renewed its partnership with the Quebec Consortium for Drug Discovery by investing a further $5 million over five years in the organization so it can continue its support of biopharmaceutical research in the province. The investment by Merck is part of its 2010 pledge to invest $100 million over five years in biopharmaceutical research and development programs with Quebec companies and academic and research institutions. The mission of the not-for-profit organization is to identify, finance and support co-operative research projects focusing on key enabling technologies for drug discovery and development.

Canada’s corporate tax cuts to create 100,000 jobs: Study

"Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s plan to reduce corporate tax rates over the next two years will generate new jobs, boost investment and help raise government revenue," according to an economist. The final cut to corporate income tax rates, from 16.5% to 15%, would result in $30-billion in additional business investment and 102,500 new jobs over a seven-year period, the study estimates, shows Jack Mintz’s latest paper on the Canadian economy.

U.S.-based Mortenson opens first Canadian operation in Mississauga, Ont.

Construction firm Mortenson, an affiliate of U.S.-based M.A. Mortenson Company, will now offer planning, program management, preconstruction, engineering, general contracting, design-build and construction management from its new office in Mississauga, Ontario. In Canada, Mortenson is also involved in wind power projects.

Google to double staff in its Montreal office

Google Inc. announced plans to double the size of its Montreal office by the end of 2011 (adding an extra 25 positions). Most of those who work in Montreal are software developers who produce software to support the company’s Chrome web browser. It was also said that Montreal’s role in the company is sure to expand as it grows. Wendy Rozeluk, a spokesperson for Google Canada, said "Google is expanding in nearly all its offices around the globe, but because of the innovation that has come out of Canada, it’s focusing more on this country."

SAS to add 25 new Canadian jobs

Headquartered in North Carolina, the SAS Institute announced plans to increase its employee base by 10% after posting strong global revenue numbers in 2010. In Canada, the analytics software company saw year-over-year revenue growth outpace the global figure, with the Canadian subsidiary recoding a 9% increase in total operating revenue and a 10% increase in total software sales for 2010. "The Canadian market has been steady," Carl Farrell, president of SAS Canada, said. "The demand has certainly been there a littler earlier from banks and insurance companies for our fraud solutions." Farrell added that SAS Canada will add 25 new positions to facilitate the growth.

G-Data Software AG, a security software vendor from Germany, has" big growth plans for this year in Canada." "Although it does business in more than 80 countries, most of G-Data’s business today comes from Europe and Asia," Gary Sidhu, vice-president of sales and marketing, North America for G-Data, said. In addition, "G-Data currently has about 20 partners in North America, five of which are from Canada," Sidhu said. "In Canada, we’re aiming to have at least 40 partners," he added.

Chinese companies are ready to invest in Canada

A report, by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, of more than 1,300 mostly SMEs from China shows strong interest in investing in Canadian manufacturing, with about 8% of the Chinese companies surveyed said they planned to invest in Canada within the next three years. In addition, the survey shows that the average size of intended overseas investment is about $16 million. And among respondents planning to invest in Canada, 49% described the manufacturing sector as a prospective destination for capital.
