Rio Tinto subsidiary to invest $800M in Quebec facilities

Dominique Bouchard, president of Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium announced an investement in the company’s operations in Canada. The Rio Tinto subsidiary will extend the life of its Lac Tio ilmenite mine in Quebec until 2050 and modernize its Sorel-Tracy metallurgical complex, part of $800 million in investments in the province over the next five years. The move is expected to create 70 new jobs.

Report: Canada among most peaceful nations in the world

According to the 2011 Global Peace Index by Institute for Economics and Peace, Canada is once again among the Top 10 most peaceful countries in the world. The Index ranked Canada as the eighth most peaceful country in the world in which to live, out of 153 countries measured. Warmer foreign relations and a decrease to the lowest possible level on what the institute calls the "political terror scale," all contributed to Canada’s position in the survey.

The Project Group America opens subsidiary in Montreal

Youth movement is fuelling Canada’s digital media

Canada’s digital industries are mainly small businesses, most of which are less than eight years old, have eschewed government financing and expect revenue to increase in the next year, according to a Pixel to Product research study. The study shows that Canada’s digital media industry is fuelled by the growth of the mobile application, digital marketing and social media industries. In addition, Canada has quickly evolved into a hotbed of technology innovation, and the report represents the most complete snapshot to date of the country’s emerging digital economy. “We learned that the Canadian digital media economy is strong," Justin Kozuch, lead researcher on the study.

DeWind Co announces wind turbine purchase agreement with Wind Energy Institute of Canada

DeWind Co, a unit owned by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, will supply five wind turbines to the 10MW Wind Energy Institute of Canada (WEICan) research site on PEI. The project will be the flagship installation for the new 2MW D9.2 wind turbine model being rolled out by DeWind Co during 2011. The WEICan 10MW site is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Ontario Clean Technology Alliance to attract investment at WINDPOWER 2011

The Ontario Clean Technology Alliance is attending WINDPOWER 2011 in Anaheim where CanWEA has declared that the province of Ontario is Canada’s wind energy leader. Ontario currently has 1,636MW of installed capacity, a further 2,125MW based on signed contracts, and applications for an additional 6,672MW of wind energy development, for a total of 10,433MW. The goal of going to the Anaheim event is to show wind energy companies from around the world that Ontario is the best place in North America to expand or relocate their businesses. Ontario offers targeted alternative energy and clean technology incentives, a deep talent pool, and a strong and stable economy.

Report: Canada ranks highly in quality of life

Globally, Canada ranked second in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (OECD) Better Life Index. The Index aims to let people measure and compare their lives with those in other countries in a way that goes beyond traditional GDP numbers. Canada performs exceptionally well in measures of well-being, the OECD says, noting that it ranks among the top countries in a large number of topics in the index. In terms of employment, nearly 72% of people aged 15 to 64 in Canada have a paying job.

United Solar opens new manufacturing facility in Ontario

United Solar, owned by Energy Conversion Devices, is opening a new manufacturing facility in Ontario. The Michigan solar company is deploying $8 million of capital equipment and investing an additional $4 million in facilities improvement and equipment relocation. "United Solar’s investment is moving Ontario forward as a clean energy leader as we are becoming a destination point for renewable energy projects and manufacturing," said the Honourable Brad Duguid, Minister of Energy.

American United Entertainment to invest $40M in Canada

Hollywood film financier and producer American United Entertainment said it will "embrace tax credits and other taxpayer subsidies in Ontario" with an investment of $40 million in future film, TV and digital media production. The company’s CEO mentioned that they are open to the possibilities for American United Entertainment expansions in gaming, special effects and social media. Ontario earlier secured outside investment from Ubisoft, Electronic Arts and Capcom Entertainment as it looks to build out its digital production sector beyond traditional film and TV product.

Invenergy invest in Quebec wind farm

Invenergy Wind LLC, based in Chicago, said it has closed an agreement to acquire the 156MW Des Moulins wind energy project in Quebec from wind developer 3Ci. The project is expected to begin commercial operation in 2013. This will be Invenergy’s third wind project in Quebec.
