$344 million expansion for MaRS in Toronto to create 4,000 jobs

Ontario’s Research and Innovation Minister Glen Murray has announced the MaRS science complex in Toronto will double in size after a $344.5 million expansion. Hailing “some very creative leasing and financing arrangements with the private sector,” the minister said the 20-storey addition will create 4,000 construction jobs and enlarge MaRS to 1.5 million sq. ft. of offices and laboratories. The addition, which should be completed by fall 2013, will house the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research and Public Health Ontario’s central lab, which prevents and controls infectious diseases.

Dr. Oetker’s first North American pizza plant coming to London

Food manufacturer Dr. Oetker Canada, who’s parent company is based in Germany, is expanding into Southwestern Ontario, providing opportunities for Ontario farmers and creating 430 direct and indirect jobs in London. Dr. Oetker Canada is building its first North American frozen pizza production facility in the area. The expansion project will help the company source over 24 million pounds of ingredients from Ontario farmers and food processors and produce about 50 million frozen pizzas per year for the Canadian and U.S markets.

Fast-growing Quebec video game company Frima Studio creating jobs

Frima Studio, a video game company based in Quebec City, has continually hired new talent in the past few years, according to The Montreal Gazette. The company has grown in eight years to more than 300 employees, and now pulls in development contracts from the world’s top entertainment companies, including Disney, Warner Bros. and Nickelodeon.

Spanish developer pitches wind projects in Digby, Nova Scotia

Grupo Gauscor of Spain and the Membertou First Nations of Cape Breton have formed Anaia Global Renewable Energies. A spokesperson from Anaia, Rodrigo Mauro, spoke to Digby town and district councils about investing in and developing local wind farms. Mauro says Anaia is looking to develop at least five projects in Nova Scotia. Anaia is hoping to partner with municipalities and native bands to take advantage of the Nova Scotia government’s newly released COMFIT rates. These are special electricity prices paid by Nova Scotia Power to encourage community-based renewable energy projects.

L’économie de l’Ontario axée sur l’énergie propre a permis de créer 20 000 emplois à ce jour, tout en fournissant de l’électricité propre et renouvelable pour alimenter nos foyers et nos entreprises. Jusqu’ici, plus de 2 000 petits et moyens projets découlant du Programme de tarifs de rachat garantis ont été annoncés, ce qui représente suffisamment d’électricité pour alimenter chaque année environ 900 000 foyers. Ceci s’inscrit dans le cadre du plan de l’Ontario pour remplacer les centrales alimentées au charbon à haute teneur en soufre par des sources d’énergie plus propres et renouvelables, telles que l’eau, le vent, le soleil et la bioénergie. Cela fait également partie du plan de la province pour construire une filière électrique propre, moderne et fiable pour des années à venir.

Ontario’s clean energy economy has created 20,000 jobs to date, while supplying clean, renewable energy to power our homes and businesses. So far, more than 2,000 mid-size and large-scale Feed-in Tariff projects have been announced, representing enough electricity each year to power about 900,000 homes. This is part of Ontario’s plan to replace dirty, coal-fired plants with cleaner sources of renewable energy like water, wind, solar and bio-energy. It’s also part of the province’s plan to build a clean, modern and reliable electricity system for tomorrow.

Sunny Saskatchewan a potential solar power leader, says CanSIA

Potential exists to build a major solar industry in Saskatchewan, reports The Star-Phoenix. Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA) anticipates big growth for the industry in Saskatchewan and across the country. By 2025, CanSIA hopes to see solar energy widely deployed throughout Canada, its market competitiveness such that the government incentives are unnecessary, and recognized as an established component of Canada’s energy mix. The association envisions a solar industry that supports more than 35,000 jobs and displaces 15 million to 31 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year.

Maine tidal company partners with N.S. company on tidal turbine project

Portland-based Ocean Renewable Power and Fundy Tidal of Nova Scotia plan to install underwater turbines in the Petit Passage off western Nova Scotia in the fall of 2012. John Ferland, Ocean Renewable’s vice-president, said the potential for development in Canadian waters “is 10 times larger” than what’s in Maine. The goal in the Petit Passage is to install about 15 to 20 of Ocean Renewable’s tidal power units that could end up creating up to two megawatts of energy for Digby County.

Teva to expand pharmaceutical production in Ontario, create 20 new jobs

Pharmaceutical company Teva Canada, whose parent company is Israel-based Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., announced it will expand its production while creating 20 jobs and protecting 182 jobs at its Stouffville, Markham and Scarborough plants. The company plans to upgrade its equipment, which will in turn increase production of generic prescription medication.

Iceland-based food supplier to expand and create 50 new jobs

The company is creating a fresh food manufacturing centre for Canadian food retailers. The company has recently introduced its product line to a number of stores in Ontario and says it will continue to expand into 2012.
