Le commerce électronique manque de souffle au Canada, selon le nouveau dirigeant de Google Canada, Chris O’Neill, de sorte que Google projette d’embaucher davantage de personnel pour consolider sa marque de commerce au pays. Lors d’un entretien téléphonique accordé du siège social à Mountain View, en Californie, M. O’Neill a indiqué que le message lancé était clair: il est nécessaire d’investir pour favoriser la croissance de l’entreprise au Canada. Google compte déjà 150 employés au pays, dans ses bureaux situés à Toronto, Montréal, Ottawa et dans la région de Kitchener et Waterloo, en Ontario. M. O’Neill a dit ne pas savoir combien de nouveaux travailleurs la compagnie engagerait, mais les embauches pourraient avoir lieu dans les services de l’ingénierie, des ventes, de la mise en marché et de la politique.

Google eyes Canadian expansion to strengthen business brand

Canadian e-commerce is lagging and Google plans to hire more staff to strengthen its business brand in this country, says the new head of Google Canada. "The message is very clear: invest for growth in Canada," Chris O’Neill said in a phone interview from Mountain View, Calif. Google already has 150 employees in Canada at offices in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and the Kitchener-Waterloo region of Ontario. Mr. O’Neill isn’t sure yet how many new employees the company will hire but they could be in engineering, sales, marketing and policy.

Ontario leads charge as Canada becomes world’s third-largest game development community

A combination of a deep talent pool, strong economy and targeted incentives has helped the Province of Ontario push Canada to the world’s third largest centre for video-game development talent, trailing only Japan and the United States. Executives from the Ontario Technology Corridor are attending the Game Developers Conference (GDC Europe 2010) in Cologne to show digital entertainment companies that Ontario is the best place in North America to expand or relocate their businesses. Ontario’s fast-growing entertainment and creative cluster produces $15 billion in revenue and over 200,000 jobs, contributing $12.7 billion to the province’s GDP.

Chrysler to spend $27M on Toronto auto parts plant

Chrysler Canada is spending $27.2 million on new technology for its auto parts casting plant in Toronto, preserving the factory’s 280 jobs. The plant in Etobicoke, which currently produces aluminum die castings and pistons, is being prepared to make vehicle suspension parts called crossmembers starting in the third quarter of 2011, Chrysler said.

Google Waterloo grows into new office space

Google is expanding its presence in the Waterloo, Ontario, region as it prepares to move into a new office and is planning to hire for positions in product management, user experience, and software engineering. The new location at the Lang Tannery district in downtown Kitchener amounts to two floors of office space. The building, across the street from the University of Waterloo, also aligns with Google’s green initiatives.

The province’s first-ever wind turbine blade manufacturing plant and a new solar module manufacturing facility will serve Ontario’s growing clean, green energy industry and create up to 1,400 jobs. Companies that want to secure clean energy Feed-in Tariff (FIT) contracts must use Ontario products and services for a specific percentage of their project. The 694 clean energy contracts already announced are expected to create approximately 20,000 direct and indirect green economy jobs over five years and about $9 billion in private sector investment.

RBI considers corporates in banks, highlights Canada model

Industrial and business houses may be allowed to set up banks, with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) saying it could be one way to broaden the reach of banking in the country and thereby achieve inclusive growth. The RBI has laid out options for the minimum capital required and the extent of promoter shareholding where it has highlighted the Canadian model. It has also said that the aggregate non-resident investment, including FDI, NRI and FII, could be capped a suitable level below 50% and locked at this level for 10 years.

Frito Lay New Minas was recently recognized as the first Canadian facility to send less than 1% of its waste to landfills.

Siemens joins Samsung in Ontario green power deal

Germany’s Siemens AG will build wind turbines to supply as much as 600 megawatts of energy for the province of Ontario under an agreement reached with Samsung C&T. As part of the deal, Siemens will set up Ontario’s first turbine blade factory. The establishment of the plant is a key milestone in the province’s plan to create 50,000 jobs and become a clean energy hub in North America. Siemens said the agreement with Samsung and its partner, Pattern Energy, will create 300 jobs and an additional 600 construction and indirect service jobs.

Swedish manufacturer expands its New Brunswick operation

Buoyed by rebounding markets and a new product line, Systemair AB is hiring at its Canadian manufacturing plant in Bouctouche, N.B. The Swedish company wants to add another 20 employees to its staff of about 150 in the small town, where the firm produces ventilation products for wholesale customers in Canada and the United States. Headquartered in Skinnskatteberg, Sweden, Systemair has operations in 38 countries.
